Dick has been appointed to work with students on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, Colorado.
The School of Mines is a public research university devoted to Engineering and Applied Science, making it a unique campus. Although there are degrees offered in Liberal Arts and International Studies, 89% of the predominately male student population are engineering majors.
Dick is excited to integrate all his skills and gifts in the effort – to the community, professors, and students alike.
Dick grew up in Corvallis, Oregon, where his parents saw to it that he regularly attended Sunday school and church. While in high school, he was invited by a friend to a party sponsored by a youth program at the community’s First Baptist Church.
At that event, a compelling message challenged Dick to surrender his life and commit it to Jesus Christ.
Following a brief involvement as an engineer (his undergraduate emphasis), Dick began to feel the Lord calling him to ministry and seminary training at Western Seminary in Portland, graduating with his M.Div. After graduation, he and Judi began a campus ministry at the University of Denver.
It was while Dick was on the DU campus that he started his clinical training in counseling as a means of complimenting his ministry effectiveness. He completed both a Masters and a PhD in Counseling Psychology.
Through the years, Dick has added to his work in evangelism with students to include counseling, working strategically with students in leadership development, creating various support groups to empower them in their growth, and even briefly working in supervision of students through the role of VP for Student Affairs at a small college.
Dick is passionately committed to learning from the people he works with, and teaching, coaching, and challenging men and women and families to faith-growth disciplines. He hungers to trust God more himself and works to encourage others by his example.
Judi grew up in a Christian, evangelical ministry-oriented home with her parents involved in Campus Ambassadors and later church-planting work. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the age of 4, following in baptism early in grade school. It wasn’t until high school that Judi developed that relationship with a strong commitment to fully serve Him with her life.
Judi has been privileged to work with students both in a discipleship capacity and through leadership and life coaching. She also brings a passion to provide a home-away-from-home atmosphere where students are able to converse easily with her about life and faith while rubbing shoulders in the very practical work of preparing meals or digging in the garden.
Dick met Judi while in college, where he was involved in campus ministry as a student leader under Bob Howe at Oregon State University. They married a year after his graduation.
Dick and Judi have six grown sons: Mark, Jon, Jeremy, Ben, Zack and Nathan, four of whom are married.
They have five grandsons and one little princess granddaughter so far. Family lives within easy visiting distance, and frequently Dick and Judi’s table is expanded to fill the dining and living room – with students and friends included!
