David graduated from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in 1990, and served twenty-five years in the Air Force (AF) before retiring in 2014. While at the academy, he found his life calling, “to lead and develop people.” In the AF, he gained extensive experience in many operational, support, and educational enterprises, including two years of teaching at the USAFA, 12 years as an F-16 Flight Instructor, and leading the most diverse technical skills training group in the AF. In that capacity, he was in charge of over 18,000 Department of Defense and international personnel as they learned the skills that would carry them through their military careers. David has extensive experience as a pilot, instructor, manager, commander, and finally, as an executive leader. After leaving the AF, David desired to put this experience to use serving the Lord, so he entered the Ph.D. in Leadership Philosophy program at Dallas Baptist University, where he has remained a full-time student. Missions Door appointed David on October 10, 2018 and the American Pathways University Executive Board appointed David as the President-Elect on October 20, 2018.
David became a Christian in 1975, while walking to church in Wrightwood, California with his mother. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Lord in 1986, while attending the United States Air Force Academy.
David and Krystal Murphy were married in 1991, and have three boys, biological bothers adopted from Japan in 2007. Krystal is currently still serving in the Air Force, and the family lives in Germany.
